Short description:

In Alter do Chão, the Amazon reveals one of its most scenic faces, formed by countless islands and strips of dazzling white sand that emerge in the summer amidst the greenish waters of the Tapajós River. There, in the so-called Amazonian Caribbean, you will navigate through an incredible maze of waterways that includes the river, creeks (igarapés), flooded forests (igapós), and the crystal-clear, warm waters of Lago Verde. There is also time to relax in rustic straw huts while enjoying fresh juices made from the region’s typical fruits.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 – Departure / Santarém – Alter do Chão
Board flight to Santarém. Reception at Santarém Airport and transfer to the village of Alter do Chão. Accommodation at the selected hotel. Rest of the day at leisure for independent activities.

Day 2 – Jamaraquá Community – National Forest – Trails and Canoeing
Visit to the Jamaraquá Community, located within the Tapajós National Forest. The community is part of a project supporting sustainable forest management in the Amazon. The tour provides visitors with insight into how riverine (traditional) populations use natural resources. A new source of income is ecological (artisanal) leather production. During the visit, it is possible to see the entire latex transformation process. Jamaraquá is one of the smallest communities in the Tapajós National Forest.
We will begin a walk in the Amazon rainforest (primary forest). There are two trail options: the first lasting approximately 2h30 (round trip), and the second around 4h30. Along the way, you will see towering trees over 30 meters high. Stop for lunch (included). On the way back, optional canoeing through the flooded forest (igapó) or small creeks (igarapés). On the return journey, we will visit several beautiful beaches. After sunset, return to the hotel or lodge.

Day 3 – Ponta Grande Beach – Corocas Community – Amazon Turtle Watching
After breakfast, we will cross the mighty Tapajós River and reach the Arapiuns River. Our first visit will be to the Corocas Community, a group of indigenous descendants. There, you will learn about local crafts, such as tucumã straw weaving and other handmade pieces, as well as part of their culture. Stop for lunch (included). Afterwards, stops for swimming at white-sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, including Ponta Grande and Ponta do Icuxí – among the most beautiful in the region. In Corocas, we will also visit indigenous stingless bee breeding and the Amazon turtle conservation project. In the late afternoon, we will return to Alter do Chão by speedboat, admiring the sunset at Ponta do Cururu.

Day 4 – Lago Verde – Igapó do Macaco – Enchanted Forest
After breakfast, we will cross Lago Verde in a traditional indigenous canoe pulled by a small motor (rabeta). We will land at Alter do Chão’s main beach, the famous Ilha do Amor. From there, we will continue by boat to the Igapó do Macaco. Between March and August, part of the forest is submerged, creating a stunning landscape where it is possible to observe fish and birds that inhabit the flooded trees. Between September and February, the landscape changes completely, with small streams (igarapés) and crystal-clear springs where we can swim.
Stop for lunch (not included – suggested options: Farol da Ilha Restaurant or a beachside meal). Free afternoon to relax and swim at Alter do Chão’s postcard-perfect beaches. In the evening, at 8:00 pm, we will take small boats to a deserted beach for a traditional local experience called Piracaia – a luau-style beach banquet with grilled fish, fruits, and traditional Carimbó dances.

Day 5 – Alter do Chão – Santarém / Departure
Transfer to Santarém Airport and flight back to your hometown.

“The order of tours will not necessarily follow the day-by-day description above and may be altered at the discretion of the local guide/operator.”

Note: The boat may remain anchored in a safe, sheltered location, which could cause delays. For safety reasons, navigation on the Tapajós, Amazon, or Arapiuns Rivers will only proceed after weather evaluation and authorization by the captain and local guides in case of rough waters or storms.
