Short description:

The journey from Ilhéus (BA) along the Costa do Dendê includes off-road stretches through coconut groves, coastal scrublands, cacao plantations—and, of course, oil palm groves—leading to a section of the Bahian coastline preserved by its isolation. To explore what makes the peninsula truly special, the itinerary includes a transfer to Itaipu Beach, where it’s time to put on a mask and snorkel and dive into a true natural aquarium formed by reefs teeming with fish in every imaginable color. The snorkeling experience is framed by a stunning setting: light-blue waters, golden sand, and endless rows of coconut trees.

The relaxed atmosphere and traditional coastal lifestyle extend along 40 kilometers of beach and a village with a simple little church, shady squares beneath enormous almond trees, capoeira circles forming at sunset, and even a garden of giant bromeliads in the surrounding area. The coves remain practically deserted year-round, even during high season, as visitors are spread out along the long beaches. To complete the itinerary, the nearby village of Camamu features sandy streets with little vehicle traffic, breathtaking sunsets, and gardens filled with flowers and fruit trees.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 – Origin / Ilhéus – Maraú
Boarding for Ilhéus. Reception at the airport, followed by a 75 km drive on a paved road through lush nature, with the rich greenery of the Atlantic Forest. Along the way, we will stop at a viewpoint on the ascent to Serra Grande to enjoy the panoramic view of Serra Grande Beach. We then continue for another 35 km on a well-maintained dirt road, passing cacao farms, rubber tree plantations, and coconut groves. The total travel time from Ilhéus Airport to Lagoa do Cassange Lodge is approximately 2 hours.

Day 2 – Natural Pools
Travel along dirt roads through coconut groves and a stretch of Atlantic Forest, where we can see the Bromeliad Garden, with plants that can reach over two meters in diameter. Then, along a route passing through open fields and coastal scrublands, we pass by the foot of Lighthouse Hill, also known as Morro de Taipus (an indigenous term referring to the rounded hills characteristic of the area). Continuing through oil palm and coconut plantations, we reach Taipus Beach, also known as the Natural Pools. At low tide, nature has created one of the most beautiful natural pools, surrounded by reefs and filled with colorful fish and corals.

With virtually no waves during low tide—and there are two low tides per day—the pool offers exceptional water visibility. It is the ideal place for snorkeling and discovering the fascinating underwater world. After the swim, we suggest a delicious traditional lunch (not included) at Lucidalva’s restaurant, located on the way back to the lodge.
Equipment rental is available at the beach (snorkel, mask, vest, and fins).
Approximate duration: 4 hours. Difficulty level: easy.

Day 3 – Eco-Social Experience
We begin our day with a visit to the Maramar Community School, an education and culture project that we are proud to have helped create, benefiting children of various ages here on the Maraú Peninsula. We then take a short tour through the mangroves, in one of the most preserved regions in the country. This is an opportunity to connect with the richness of mangrove ecosystems, the great nurseries of the oceans. We finish the day by visiting the neighboring community of Saleiro and enjoying a delicious artisanal cacao ice cream made by Bil, one of the lodge’s longest-standing collaborators.

Day 4 – Islands of Camamu Bay and Tremembé Waterfall
A tour to discover the other side of the Maraú Peninsula, with the calm and unique landscapes of Camamu Bay. Aboard a comfortable speedboat, we will explore Camamu Bay, the third largest bay in Brazil and the most preserved, where mangroves, beaches, small islands, and villages form truly special scenery.

The tour departs from the small Jobel Port and heads north along the peninsula. We will pass Taipu de Dentro Beach and sandbanks, reaching Campinho and Goió Islands, where we can stop for a swim in calm waters. We then continue to Pedra Furada Island, one of the region’s postcards. At low tide, the surrounding sandbanks emerge, making the landscape even more beautiful.

Lunch stop (not included) on Sapinho Island, where fresh lobster, fish, and shrimp are available. After lunch, we head by boat to the southern part of the bay toward Tremembé Waterfall, which emerges from the Atlantic Forest and flows directly into the salty waters of the bay. Those who wish may disembark and walk with a local guide to the natural pools formed above the waterfall, creating true natural whirlpool baths (not included). On the return, we will see the town of Maraú and navigate through the narrow channel, a mangrove area that, at high tide, offers a spectacular display of water reflections.
Approximate duration: 7 hours. Difficulty level: easy.
