Short description:

One of the most authentic faces of the northeastern coastline, the so-called Cocoa Coast is home to pristine white-sand beaches, rivers, waterfalls surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, the legacy of the irreverent Jorge Amado, and the captivating, laid-back rhythm of Bahia. All of this is accompanied by a refreshing breeze blowing from the deep blue sea.

Many of the beaches are so small that they don’t even appear on maps or travel guides. Others, like Prainha – a famous surfing spot in Itacaré – have been internationally featured in guides and lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Beyond rankings, what enchants in Itacaré is the vibrant contrast of the Atlantic Forest cascading onto the sea in private coves, accessible only by trails filled with natural showers, viewpoints, and coconut groves. This is the case of Tijuípe, Engenhoca, and Itacarezinho. Another irresistible option on the itinerary is to navigate the Contas River, cutting through dense forest with strategic stops at waterfalls, natural pools, seasonal fruit orchards, and cocoa plantations that have long inspired Bahian literature.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 – Origin / Ilhéus – Itacaré
Flight to Ilhéus. Arrival, reception at the airport, and transfer to Itacaré, approximately 1 hour by paved road. Accommodation at the chosen inn.

Day 2 – Itacaré – Hike to Prainha
The walk begins along the urban beaches of Itacaré, including Resende, Tiririca, Costa, and Ribeira. From Ribeira Beach, a 40-minute trail starts through the Atlantic Forest, passing natural showers, viewpoints, and coconut groves, leading to Prainha, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil by surfers and visitors. Free time to rest under the shade of coconut trees and/or enjoy a swim in the sea. Return to Itacaré around 3:00 PM.

Day 3 – Itacaré – Four Beaches with Tijuípe Waterfall
Departure from Itacaré around 9:00 AM by vehicle to the trailhead. The hike continues through the Atlantic Forest, passing Engenhoca and Havaizinho beaches, with views of Camboa Beach and a longer stop at Itacarezinho Beach. The walk continues to Tijuípe Waterfall, with time for a swim. Return by vehicle to Itacaré around 4:30 PM.

Day 4 – Itacaré – Boat Trip on the Contas River with Cleandro Waterfall
Walk from Itacaré to Coroinha Beach to board a rustic canoe and navigate upriver along the Contas River for 40 minutes. Along the way, we may stop at local plantations to sample regional fruits such as jambo, mango, or cocoa, depending on the season. Upon arrival at Cleandro’s site, a 5-minute walk through a small cocoa plantation leads to a 26-meter-high waterfall with three drops, forming a natural pool for swimming. On the return, we will pass by a small riverside restaurant to enjoy typical food and relax in hammocks while feeling the pleasant river breeze. (Lunch not included.) Return to Itacaré around 3:30 PM. For all excursions, we recommend: hat or cap, light clothing, swimwear, towel, sneakers or sandals, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Day 5 – Itacaré – Ilhéus / Origin
Transfer from the inn to Ilhéus for the flight back to the city of origin.
